Earth bag structure for Mary’s Meals’ Kitchens

Mary’s Meals is an international charity based in Scotland who provide daily life changing meals to over 989,000 hungry children worldwide. Meals are provided at school, helping increase the number of children receiving education and improving their opportunities for a better future. In delivering food to so many chronically hungry children, each school requires a dedicated food preparation and cooking area, alongside space to store food supplies. These school kitchens are central to the daily activity of Mary’s Meals and good design and high quality construction of each kitchen can make a big difference for the teams of local people working hard to provide a healthy meal day after day.

Orkidstudio have teamed up with Mary’s Meals to design and build kitchens which respond effectively to widely ranging climates, improving natural lighting, ventilation and extraction of smoke and steam from the large pots used to cook for so many. The first kitchens go on site in Kenya and will spread further afield as Mary’s Meals continue their work across Africa, Asia and the Americas.
