The Mansio is a temporary mobile structure which toured Hadrian’s Wall in northern England during summer 2016. The project provided an events space and residency for featured poets and writers.
The Mansio’s migratory nature involved the careful analysis of the self-supporting structure to wind speeds expected during transportation and on sites widely known for extreme conditions. The structure consists of a steel frame with a trussed roof, braced towers and translucent polycarbonate cladding.
Working with architectural designer Matthew Butcher, we employed a careful balance between architectural ambition and structural stability, developing a system which could also be unbolted or hinged in various locations for transportation.
