Economic houses using earth bags – £1k house
The 1k house is a project that addresses the challenge of providing affordable housing to population with low revenue in Kenya. The construction method was developed around the use of earth bags as a main material to keep the costs to a minimum. The roof consists of timber trusses evenly spaced to support corrugated metal sheets. The construction skills and techniques can be easily passed on to anyone who has a desire to acquire them.
The financing of the construction is supported by the revenue of an agricultural cooperative formed by 15 local women with a goal that the enterprise will generate enough income to enable fifteen 1k houses to be built, one for each woman.
